With only a few weeks left until the opening of ‘Harm Reduction 2008: IHRA’s 19th International Conference’, welcome to the conference newsletter for April 2008. We now have over 1,400 delegates registered for participation (with over 900 already paid), and demand for accommodation is high in Barcelona, so please visit www.ihraconferences.net as soon as possible for the latest information, including the following:






















This newsletter contains some of the latest news and development for the conference. Closer to the event itself, in early May, we will send all delegates a final newsletter containing important travel and logistical information ahead of your journeys to Spain. IDPC Announce Key Meetings on the UN Drug Policy Review


The International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC) are pleased to announce two key meetings in conjunction with Harm Reduction 2008 – both supported by IHRA. Firstly, there is a meeting in Barcelona on Saturday 10th May entitled ‘The United Nations Drug Policy Review’. This is the latest in a series of IDPC meetings to update civil society on the latest news from the UN Review. This will be followed by a ‘Lunchtime Meeting’ in the conference venue on Monday 12th May entitled ‘The United Nations and Harm Reduction: Joining Up The UN Drug Control and HIV Prevention Strategies’, which will discuss the key issues relevant to harm reduction and injection drug use, and describe the mechanisms by which NGOs can get involved to promote a positive outcome from the UN review.

Suboxone: What’s New?

IHRA are pleased to announce a satellite meeting on Sunday 11th May which will highlight the latest evidence and opinion on the use of ‘Suboxone’ (combination tablets of buprenorphine and Naloxone) as a medically assisted treatment for opioid dependence. The meeting – from 13.15 to 15.30 in the conference venue - will include the latest post-marketing surveillance and laboratory data from the USA, Australia, and France, and is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Schering-Plough.

Medical Facilities in Barcelona: Important Deadline Approaching


The Conference Organisers – with the support of a conference Health Committee – are providing extensive medical and healthcare facilities and services for conference delegates in Barcelona. Delegates who require the provision of various medical treatments when they are at the conference (including methadone) must send their information before Friday 25th April 2008 in order for us to process your requests in time.

HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C in Prison Settings


The Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, the Open Society Institute and the International Centre for the Advancement of Addiction Treatment have organised a major satellite event on Sunday May 11th 2008 (08:30 – 15:30), which is supported by IHRA (amongst others). This meeting (with translation available from English into Russian and Spanish) will provide in-depth information on a wide range of issues related to HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and tuberculosis in prisons. There will be presentations from prison officials, UN representatives, NGOs and former prisoners, as well as skills-building and networking opportunities.

4th International Conference on Alcohol and Harm ReductionIHRA and Quest 4 Quality are pleased to announce a satellite conference in Barcelona to discuss ideas and share experiences about alcohol harm reduction interventions. The one-day event - in the conference venue on Sunday May 11th 2008 - will allow delegates to gain new ideas, insights and knowledge on how to effectively address alcohol related harms, particularly around the topic of alcohol and youth. Registration is free for delegates who have already paid to attend Harm Reduction 2008.

Russian Translation Now Available
We are delighted to announce that Russian translation will now be available at Harm Reduction 2008 – making Russian the fourth language available at the event (in addition to English, Spanish and French). Simultaneous Russian translation will be provided for the opening and closing sessions, all Plenary Sessions, plus selected Major and Concurrent Sessions – as well as the satellite meeting on prisons (see above).
